Jordan returns "military service" to males between 25 and 29 years old

On Wednesday, the Jordanian government announced the reinstatement of compulsory military service, "military service" for males between the ages of 25 and 29, with the high unemployment rate in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Wednesday, the Jordanian Ministry of Labor and the Armed Forces signed a memorandum of understanding that constitutes a framework for "military service" in a new fashion. Its period is set at 12 months, including 3 months of purely military training and 9 months of vocational and technical training.

The Jordanian state television broadcast the signing ceremony sponsored by Prime Minister Omar Razzaz, who said, “Today we inaugurate together, a national project close to the conscience of every Jordanian, which is the service of knowledge and in partnership with pride and pride with the armed forces - the Arab Army, the school of patriotism, belonging and discipline.”

He added, "Our youth and our human energies are our most valuable asset, and we cannot stand idly by in front of the increase in unemployment figures, which is a global phenomenon that is worsening in light of the continuing Corona pandemic."

Every Jordanian in the age group between 25 to 29 years will be required to "serve in education" if he is healthy fit, does not study, does not work, is not traveling, is not the head of a family before he is summoned, and he is not the only male of his parents.

The taxpayer is given 100 dinars a month (about $ 140) during the period of compulsory service.

"Five thousand young people will be summoned in the first batch of the current year (2020) born in 1995, and 15 thousand will be summoned next year," Labor Minister Nidal Bataineh said during a press conference after the signing.

He added that the government and the armed forces would strive to "gradually increase the capacity."

Jordan stopped serving the flag in 1991, nearly three years before signing a peace agreement with Israel.

According to the Department of Statistics, the unemployment rate in Jordan rose to 23 percent in the first quarter of this year, compared to 19 percent for the same period last year.

Jordan is experiencing difficult economic conditions, with a public debt that exceeded forty billion dollars and exceeded 100 percent of GDP, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
