Several declared opposition candidates have lodged an appeal with the Constitutional Council, which must validate the candidatures.

They want him to declare Alassane Ouattara ineligible for the October 31 presidential election.

The Ivorian Constitution limits the number of presidential terms to two, but according to the presidential camp, the adoption of a new fundamental law in 2016 has reset the counters to zero.

Since the posting last week of the provisional list of 44 presidential candidates, the appeal period is open.

And the opposition rushes into it.

Thus the FPI candidate (Ivorian Popular Front) Pascal Affi N'Guessan challenges before the institution the eligibility of the outgoing head of state.

In his request addressed to the Constitutional Council, he tries to

demonstrate the illegality of an Ouattara candidacy

in 2020. “

The candidate Alassane Ouattara cannot claim a virginity of mandate allowing him to run for a third mandate (…) Obviously he continued his second term under the 2016 Constitution

, ”writes Pascal Affi N'Guessan.

EDS, the support platform for Laurent Gbagbo has also filed an appeal for the same reason and invokes the same arguments, namely “

legislative continuity

” set out in article 183 of the 2016 Constitution. Continuity with the provisions of the Constitution of 2000 which already limited the number of mandates to two.

Finally, in a long joint letter, the lawyers of Henri Konan Bédié and Guillaume Soro have also filed an appeal to claim again the rejection of the candidacy of Alassane Ouattara.

The Constitutional Council must render its decision by mid-September.
