• Health crisis IU accuses the Board of hiding for two weeks that there was community transmission of the virus in Malaga

  • Coronavirus The Board admits that there is already community transmission of the virus in the province of Malaga

The Ministry of Health lacks an objective index that makes it possible to accurately identify when a territory has already entered a phase of

"community transmission"

, that is, when it is no longer possible to trace the origin of infections.

And it does not have it, she assures, because the Ministry has not statistically defined the concept either.

In fact, the

Ministry of Health

, when asked by this newspaper, refers to the definition made in this regard by the World Health Organization (WHO), according to which it is considered that those in a situation of community transmission "are those where it is more difficult to test all suspected cases and locate their contacts ":

Despite this, the Andalusian Government spokesman,

Elías Bendodo,

announced last Tuesday that the province of Malaga had already made the leap to that situation in which the epidemic is more difficult to control and, therefore, announced that they would be adopted extraordinary measures if within two weeks it was not possible to stop the speed of infections.

Bendodo did not specify since when this substantial change had been perceived in Malaga or based on what technical criteria he classified as "community transmission" what is already happening in the province, although he pointed out that practically one in three patients admitted to Andalusia is in a hospital in Malaga.

The Minister of Health, Jesús Aguirre, clarified this Wednesday in Parliament that there is no situation of "community transmission" in Andalusia, nor in Malaga, although there are "community infections", that is, positive cases to which there are no way to link to any specific outbreak.

In other words, if the concept "community transmission" generates confusion, now it must also be differentiated from that of "community contagion".

The first would force total confinements to stop the spread of the virus, and at the moment this is not the case in any health district in Andalusia, according to the counselor.

The second describes a less serious situation.

On the other hand, the general coordinator of IU-CA,

Toni Valero

, released today an internal document of the Ministry of Health in which, already on August 24, it was warned that Malaga was in the community transmission phase.

The document released by IU specifies that the epidemiological situation of the Costa del Sol health district "is considered to be of active community transmission", given that the cumulative incidence was then (August 24) of

163.49 cases confirmed by PCR in 14 days,

"exceeded the indicator recommended by the Ministry of Health and Families, established the limit in 30 cases per 100,000 inhabitants."

If that threshold is true (30 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), there would also be other Andalusian provinces in a situation of community transmission, since the cumulative incidence in the community as a whole was 129 cases per 100,000 inhabitants this Wednesday.

Valero requested the resignation of Bendodo for "hiding" that information from public opinion for two weeks so as not to harm the tourist interests of the sector.

Andalusian Government sources insisted this Wednesday, despite everything, that there is no precise threshold that allows us to speak of "community transmission" and that, with Malaga being the province with the highest volume of cases in Andalusia, the situation of the community as a whole it is still far from that recorded by other communities or the Spanish average.

For its part, the Ministry of Health responded to EL MUNDO recognizing that Spain is already immersed in a situation similar to what the WHO considers community transmission: "In most of the territory we find ourselves in a situation of community transmission, but it is also It is true that a large part of the cases that currently exist

are associated with outbreaks

. "

It seems clear, therefore, that the lack of definition of the concept generates disparate evaluations of the same reality.
