Matthew Robson, a 28-year-old Briton, made the decision to sell his precious collection of whiskeys offered by his father as a contribution and to buy his first home.

Since his birth in 1992, the young man has received on each of his birthdays a bottle of 18-year-old Macallan single malt.

The batch of 28 Scottish grands crus is now estimated at more than 40,000 pounds, or nearly 45,000 euros.

It is described as "perfect" by whiskey sales specialist Mark Littler as quoted by the BBC.

He believes that “having such a large collection of bottles is an advantage for the sale” and specifies that “Macallan whiskeys have gained tremendous value over the past five or ten years”.

Asian and New York buyers have already shown "great interest" in this sale, reports the expert.

"A weird little gift"

The first bottle offered to Matthew Robson is a 1974 vintage. It was intended to "wet the baby's head," says his father, Pete.

The latter says he "found it interesting to buy one every year and that he arrives at his 18th birthday with 18 bottles of 18-year-old whiskey".

Over the years, the bottles have cost him around 5,000 pounds (just over 5,500 euros).

Matthew Robson says he always found alcohol to represent "a weird little gift since I was a bit young to start drinking."

The bottles came with "a strict instruction never to open them."

Fortunately, his father assures us that his son received many other gifts for his birthdays.
