Turkey: perpetrator of 2017 New Year's attack sentenced to life in prison
Thirty-nine people were killed in the terrorist attack on January 1, 2017 in the Reina club in Istanbul.

Turkish justice sentenced, Monday, September 7, to 40 terms of life imprisonment an Uzbek convicted of having carried out the attack which had made 39 dead - including 27 foreigners - in a trendy nightclub in Istanbul, on New Year's Eve Year 2017. The attack, one of the deadliest in Turkish history, was claimed by the Islamic State group.

Istanbul's 27th Assize Court, which sits just across from the prison complex where the main suspect in
the Reina club attack is being held
, has followed the prosecution's requisitions to the letter.
The judges sentenced Abdulkadir Masharipov to 40 life sentences: one for each of the 39 people killed on New Year's Eve 2017 in this famous nightclub, and one for the entire killing, claimed at the time by the
Islamic State group
.
Abdulkadir Masharipov first admitted the facts before retracting
The main suspect, of Uzbek nationality, is also sentenced to 1,368 years in prison for attempted murder against 79 people, injured that night when he opened fire with an automatic weapon.
When he was arrested, two weeks after the attack, Abdulkadir Masharipov was immediately confessed.
He then retracted during the trial, claiming to have confessed under "
pressure
" and "
torture
".
He repeated these allegations during this last hearing, demanding an acquittal.
In addition, 48 other defendants in this trial, which numbered around 60, received prison sentences for "
belonging to a terrorist organization
".
The Reina attack was the first in Turkey to be directly claimed by the Islamic State group.
