  • Rennes Métropole has been testing a system for recognizing the number of car occupants for several weeks.

  • Anonymized, the solution aims to encourage car sharing by offering carpoolers an easier parking space.

  • If the test carried out at the Préales car park proves conclusive, the solution could be generalized.

The camera scans the vehicle to check how many people are occupying it.

Are you several?

The barrier rises and a VIP parking space awaits you.

To encourage the practice of carpooling, the Rennes metropolitan area has been testing a privileged access system to the Préales park and ride for several weeks for all motorists traveling together.

Developed by the Ineo-Infracom company, the system "counts" the number of figures in each car before entering the smallest park and ride in Rennes.

“We already have parking spaces reserved for carpoolers, but their number is constant.

Our idea is to increase capacity at certain times to encourage people to share their car, ”explains the new vice-president of transport Matthieu Theurier.

About twenty places are currently reserved for carpoolers.

Tomorrow, the figure could be doubled or even tripled at peak times.

So many more places for those who share.

So many places less for those traveling alone.

“It's the idea of providing the incentive,” assumes the elected ecologist.

In fact, the reserved spaces are already used by those who are used to relay car parks.

“But no one is there to control who parks there.

Everyone does as they want, ”admits one of the caretakers of these parking lots.

If the experience turns out to be conclusive, the metropolis would like to extend it to all park and ride facilities.

A regular league called "Star't"

In addition to its new, fully anonymized system, the metropolis continues to work on a major plan to encourage carpooling.

A new meeting with representatives of the State is planned for October to discuss the establishment of dedicated lanes for carpoolers on the main entering the Breton capital.

A regular league called "Star't" will link from January the municipalities of Rheu, Pacé, Saint-Grégoire and Cesson-Sévigné.

Drivers will be recruited to share their car and will be compensated one euro per trip.

So many initiatives aimed at making carpooling more attractive than solo cars, even if the health crisis is not helping.

“I understand that some people may wonder.

But even four in a five-seater car, we respect social distancing, ”says Matthieu Theurier.
