“We strongly condemn the ongoing unreasonable and unexplained arrests and detentions for political reasons in Belarus, which have been taking place since the very beginning of the presidential election campaign,” the statement said.

According to Borrell, the EU expects Minsk to ensure the immediate release of all politically motivated detainees before and after the "falsified presidential election on 9 August."

In addition, he stressed that the EU will impose sanctions against those responsible for "violence, repression and falsification of election results."

Earlier, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that the Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka was repeatedly called upon to enter into a dialogue with all “national forces”, but a “wave of repression” is taking place.

According to him, if Lukashenka does not change course, "the EU will react."

On September 6, Borrell, speaking about the protests in Belarus, said that the republic needs a national dialogue.
