The number of dead melon-headed whales increases to 49 on the southeast coast of Mauritius

Mauritius media reported on September 5 local time that a total of 49 melon head whales have been found dead on the southeast coast of Mauritius since August 26.

The southeast coast is the most severely polluted area after the Japanese cargo ship hit the rocks.

The Ministry of Fisheries of Mauritius has previously stated that the preliminary autopsy results of several dead melon head whales showed that there were no traces of hydrocarbons in or on the body of these marine mammals, denying that the death of melon head whales was related to the oil spill.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, relevant agencies have also inspected the carcasses of other melon head whales. All samples collected will be subjected to bacteriological and toxicological tests. To determine the cause of death, it is still necessary to wait for the autopsy result report.
