Firefighters intervened Saturday morning in Saint-Grégoire north of Rennes to retrieve the body of a woman in the Ille-et-Rance canal.
It was kayakers who sounded the alert after seeing a body floating near Robinson Lock.
In cardio-respiratory arrest when help arrived, the 35-year-old victim died.
