Secretary of State Yoshihide Suga, who succeeded Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, repeatedly insisted that the basis of Korea-Japan relations was the Korea-Japan Claims Agreement signed in 1965.

In an interview with Jasankei Shimbun today (6th), Minister Suga said, "The Korea-Japan Claims Agreement is the basis of Korea-Japan relations," and "it is natural to be meticulously tied to it."

At numerous press conferences held in the capacity of the secretary of the secretary, acting as a spokesman for the Japanese government, Secretary Suga has said that the 2018 Supreme Court's ruling for compensation for conscription victims violates the Korea-Japan Claims Agreement.

He insisted that the Korean government should take the lead in taking measures consistent with the purpose of the agreement, which declared that the'claims issue was completely and finally resolved'.

In addition, the Korean plaintiff has warned of possible retaliation, saying that it is reviewing all countermeasures in preparation for cashing out the assets of the defendant company, Nippon Steel (formerly Shinil Cheol Co., Ltd.) in order to secure reparation bonds.
