The Milk Tea Alliance is mobilized on social networks

For its official release on September 4, the ranks of those calling for a boycott of the film-event are growing day after day.

In August 2019, star actress Liu Yifei, who plays Mulan, posted this message on Chinese social media, “

I support the Hong Kong police.

At the time, law enforcement was cracking down on pro-democracy protests with tear gas and rubber bullets in the former British colony.

“

I call on all who believe in human rights to boycott Mulan,

” writes pro-democracy activist Yoshua Wong on Twitter, while accusing Disney studios of kneeling in front of Beijing, and actress Liu Yifei to condone the police violence.

He also calls actress Liu Yifei “

the icon of authoritarianism

 ”.

Thank you our #MilkTeaAlliance standing in solidarity with Hong Kong and promote the #BoycottMulan campaign.

The idea of a boycott also seems to appeal to Thailand and Taiwan, two countries where young people are fighting like in Hong Kong for their freedoms and against the growing influence of China.

Under the hashtag #MilkTeaAlliance (The Milk Tea Alliance), Thai activists are reminding Beijing and Disney that the crackdown is unacceptable.
