03 September 2020 Thrown in a flowerbed of an apartment building in Roccapiemonte in the province of Salerno.

This is what happened to a newborn who was later found dead in the late afternoon yesterday.

Shock and disbelief in the citizens.

The little body, around 7 pm, was noticed in a flower bed in via Roma by an inhabitant of the area who approached his garage and gave the alarm.

The carabinieri of the local station and the colleagues of the company of Mercato San Severino intervened together with the municipal police.

Investigators found a head wound on the little body.

The body, after the external examination carried out by the coroner, was transferred to the morgue of the Nocera Inferiore hospital where it will be subjected to an autopsy.

The newborn, at the time of the discovery, still had the umbilical cord attached.

The main hypothesis is that he was born a few hours ago.

It remains to be seen whether the injury was caused by the fall or was earlier.

"It is a huge tragedy that has shaken our community", Carmine Pagano, the mayor of Roccapiemonte, told ANSA who, as soon as he heard the news, went to the place.

"I hope this story can be resolved soon, whoever is the culprit remains an endless tragedy."

As a sign of mourning, today at 18.00, the mayor invites the population to observe a minute of recollection and reflection, a request also addressed to the owners of the businesses in the city.

Meanwhile, the flags of the Municipality of Roccapiemonte will be placed at half mast.

The community is under chic and the parish priest of Roccapiemonte, Father Giuseppe Ferraioli, underlines: "We are saddened and speechless. A terrible fact that leaves us all shocked".
