In recent years, LKAB has invested large resources in exploration to secure the supply of iron ore.

That work has taken place in a more traditional way, but now they are investing together with LTU (Luleå University of Technology) in new technology.

- We see the collaboration as a technological leap that can lead to new ore discoveries, especially at great depths, says Jan-Anders Perdahl, section manager for exploration at LKAB.

First in Europe

The information on how the earth's crust is structured will be studied using the 'Common earth modeling method'.

It is new in Europe and the collaboration between LKAB and LTU is a four-year project.

- Hopefully we get a better understanding of the shape of the ore body. It will ultimately ensure future production in the Kiruna mine, says Tobias Bauer, assistant professor of ore geology at LTU.
