Only one castaway has been rescued so far.

The Japanese coastguard continued on Thursday their search in the East China Sea to try to find survivors of a cattle vessel that sank the day before with 43 crew members on board.

The

transported 5,800 cows from New Zealand to a Chinese port.

He made a distress call overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, about 185 kilometers from Amami Oshima Island (southwestern Japan), when he was caught in rough seas due to a typhoon.

An inflatable boat spotted

The rescue services have only been able to collect one survivor at sea, a 45-year-old Filipino.

One of the engines of the ship stalled when a huge wave made it turn, according to the testimony of this sailor, quoted this Thursday in a press release from the Japanese coast guard.

The man explained that he jumped overboard as the boat was turning over, having just had time to put on a life jacket.

The ship then sank, he said.

The castaway said he did not see other crew members while he waited for help.

An inflatable boat in the same area, however, was spotted by plane on the evening of Wednesday, without the emergency services having been able to access it for the moment.

Three coastguard boats, five planes and specialist divers were involved in the rescue operations.
