Marc Tarabella, a member of the European Parliament, said that the Union is monitoring the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia, and that he knows that there is a violent campaign against political activists in the kingdom and abroad.

During an online workshop organized by the London-based ALQST Organization for Human Rights in Saudi Arabia, Tarabella added that Saudi Arabia cannot guarantee human rights at a time when defenders of these rights are being imprisoned.

Tarabella stressed the need for the European Union to present a draft to be discussed and signed at the G20 summit to be hosted by Saudi Arabia in November, with the aim of putting pressure on the government to improve human rights conditions and protect basic freedoms in the country.

Abdullah Al-Awda called for fundamental reforms to achieve democracy and protect basic freedoms (Al-Jazeera)

In turn, Saudi academic Abdullah al-Awda, whose father, preacher Salman al-Awda, is in Saudi prisons, said that it is difficult for activists inside the kingdom to criticize the grave violations committed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Al-Awda suggested, during the electronic workshop, fundamental reforms to achieve democracy and protect basic freedoms, on top of which are freedom of expression and the protection of women.

"We call for necessary reforms that remove the difference between the current political situation and political institutions and the contract that exists between the ruler and the ruled, between the government and the people, so that we can hold elections and protect basic freedoms," he said.

"When we talk about the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, matters relating to human rights and democracy come to our mind immediately. These and other things that any speaker should attach the utmost importance to, and what I would like to raise here is whether the current Saudi government and the current system and its political dynamics are all these matters?" Lead to stability?

The symposium, in which Saudi activists and European parliamentarians participated, dealt with concrete proposals for the reforms necessary to achieve the goal of Saudi Arabia's presidency of the G20 this year.
