Dubai Electricity and Water Authority achieves a new global achievement

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority announced that it has achieved a new global achievement by obtaining the lowest global competitive price of $ 0.277 per cubic meter of desalinated water, as it is the first project of its kind to operate according to the independent water producer model of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

This achievement comes after the re-bid for the independent product system desalination project at Hasyan complex, with a production capacity of 120 million gallons per day, using the reverse osmosis technology (SWRO).

The authority has approved the desalination plant project in Husayyan with the independent water producer system, after the great success it achieved in using the independent energy producer model in the projects of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex.

The project is expected to be completed in 2024. This station will rely on the latest, most efficient and reliable technologies in this field, and it will work to strengthen the water network of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, to ensure that it provides a sustainable supply.

The managing director and CEO of the authority, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, said: “In implementation of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to provide 75% of Dubai's energy sources from clean energy sources by 2050, and to make Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world, we are working on Building water production plants by means of reverse osmosis because they require about 90% less energy compared to flash distillation technology, which makes this the best option for desalination. By 2030, the authority aims to produce 100% of desalinated water using clean energy and waste heat.

He added, "The project comes within our plans and strategy to reach the total production capacity of desalinated water in Dubai in 2030 to 750 million gallons per day compared to 470 million gallons per day currently. We are currently desalinating water through joint production of energy and water using the multi-stage flash distillation technology that is characterized by It relies on the use of waste heat generated by the production of electricity for water desalination, in addition to the use of reverse osmosis technology for water desalination, which is a globally proven technology that helps absorb large production capacities of renewable energy.
