03 September 2020Council of Ministers meeting in the evening at Palazzo Chigi.

On the table, among other points, a provision for the management of the migrant emergency in Lampedusa.

The CDM should examine the decree containing the economic measures to support the island, struggling with the migrant emergency.

At the Mef they worked until the last minute to close the text for this evening.

The decree should introduce, specifically, the suspension of obligations and payments, including arrears.

Demolition operations began on Thursday morning, involving 160 boats.

It was one of the points discussed at the summit convened at Palazzo Chigi by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, with the ministers, the president of Sicily, Nello Musumeci, the mayor of Lampedusa, Totò Martello.

The extraordinary operation for the removal and destruction of the small boats was commissioned by the Customs and Monopolies Agency after the authorization of the Prosecutor of Agrigento.

The Interior Ministry informs that this is the fourth intervention in 2020 for the reclamation of the port of Lampedusa following the intensification of the phenomenon of autonomous landings.

The primary objective remains to empty the hotspot in the Imbriacola district, which is in unmanageable conditions of overcrowding, with peaks of 1,200 guests for a capacity of 190. To this end, by the weekend there will be two - as promised yesterday by Conte - the large quarantine ships (around 600 seats each) sent in front of the island to welcome the migrants who will be transferred from the center.

As regards the action to support the economy, the aim is to freeze the tax deadlines for the inhabitants of Lampedusa and Linosa, as happened in 2011 with the boom in migratory flows due to the 'Arab springs' and subsidized loans for operators of fishing and tourism.

In the CDM, in addition to the measures in support of Lampedusa, also a decree law on the funds, or 200 million, in support of regions and local authorities, as per agreements made, for transport linked to the school and additional resources for school construction are contained in the decree that will be discussed and approved.
