Worldwide, to date, the coronavirus has infected 26.1 million people and caused the death of more than 865,000 people, according to a report established by AFP from official sources.

Among these deaths, Amnesty International has reported at least 7,000 health professionals.

Mexico being the hardest hit country.

“The fact that more than 7,000 people die trying to save others is a crisis of enormous magnitude,” Steve Cockburn, Social and Economic Justice Program Officer for Amnesty International, said in a statement.

More than 1,300 healthcare professionals have died in Mexico

Of these deaths, at least 1,320 occurred in Mexico, "the highest number known for a single country," notes the report

The Price to Pay for Treatment

.

A previous AI report released on July 13 listed 3,000 healthcare workers around the world.

The clear increase is explained by the increase in cases of infections in several countries, as well as by the greater availability of information.

Behind Mexico are the United States (1,077 deaths), the United Kingdom (649), Brazil (634), Russia (631), India (573), South Africa (240), Italy (188), Peru (183), Iran (164) and Egypt (159), according to Amnesty.

According to Steve Cockburn, there could be an "underreporting" of victims in several countries.

And the fact that the Mexican government keeps detailed accounts would explain the high numbers in this country compared to others.
