April 15 was a dramatic evening for eleven prison guards in one of the wards in the E-pavilion at Norrtäljeanstalten.

When a female prison guard at the usual lock-in would close a door to a cell, she felt that someone was resisting.

Shortly afterwards, the inmate stepped out into the corridor and aimed a pistol-like object at her.

The probation officer pressed the alarm and fled to a guard room.

When she reached the room and was about to close the door behind her, the captured man put a foot in between.

Several of the woman's colleagues then tried to help and finally they managed to lock the door.

Then the inmate must have waved the pistol ladder at them through a glass window.

Säpo took over

The man then barricaded himself in the department's kitchen and did not come out until the police's state force several hours later stormed buildings.

The whole incident was filmed by the institution's security cameras.

The investigation of the incident was taken over at a later stage by the security police.

- It was because of who the suspect is, says chief prosecutor Per Lindqvist at the national unit for security cases.

The detained man served an eight-year prison sentence, since in 2017-2018 he sent powder letters to several ministers with a written death threat.

Toothpaste and flour

The eleven prison guards received crisis support after the incident.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service's own investigation shows that the "pistol" was made of, among other things, paper, toothpaste and flour.

It had been colored black with charcoal or ink and the trigger was made of melted cutlery.

The man, who is 45 years old, has not wanted to speak at all in the police interrogations that have been held.

He will be brought before the Norrtälje District Court in November.
