The deputy of France Insoumise François Ruffin called on Wednesday in Lyon for a moratorium on the deployment of 5G, the new generation of mobile telephony, in France.

"What are we asking for? It is a moratorium, as long as there is not a report from the ANSES (National Health Security Agency, editor's note) on the environmental and health consequences and as long as that was not a subject publicly debated and decided by citizens, ”explained the elected representative of the Somme during a public meeting.

The deputy wants to be consistent with the final report of the Citizen's Climate Convention, which proposed the establishment of such a moratorium "pending the results of the 5G assessment on health and climate".

While the government has confirmed the launch of the auction to allocate 5G frequencies at the end of September, François Ruffin considers that it is a "contradiction" with the commitment of Emmanuel Macron to respect the wishes of the Citizen's Convention on the climate .

"I'm not taking a position on the merits. I'm just asking that before technology is implemented and shakes up our lives, we take the time to ask ourselves if this is what we need and if that's what we want. Why a new technology now? It is for democracy to decide, for people to decide, "he said.
