“Experts said they were aware of 450 documented cases of torture and ill-treatment of people imprisoned after the controversial presidential elections on August 9, which led to massive protests and arrests,” the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a statement.

The UN noted that experts received reports of "violence against women and children, including sexual violence."

The organization called on the Belarusian authorities to investigate cases of violence, as well as "bring the perpetrators to justice and provide compensation to victims and their families."

The report contains a list of experts, including, in particular, the special rapporteur on torture and other cruel treatment or punishment, Nils Melzer.

On August 12, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called on the Belarusian authorities to release all those detained during the protests and to conduct an independent investigation of human rights violations.

On August 17, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that the military actions were the result of provocations by some participants in the riots.
