  At 12:9 on September 1, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred off the coast of northern Chile (27.94 degrees south latitude, 71.10 degrees west longitude) with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

Subsequently, at 12:30, another magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred in the nearby area (28.05 degrees south latitude, 71.31 degrees west longitude) with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.
