The body of a newborn baby was discovered Monday in a waste treatment center in Montblanc (Hérault), near Béziers, the public prosecutor confirmed to AFP.

The baby, a little girl, was found in a locker where waste was stored from several waste reception centers in the Pézenas and Agde sector, a source familiar with the matter said.

The Béziers public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to find the causes of death, entrusted to the Montpellier research section and the Pézenas research brigade, prosecutor Raphaël Balland said in a statement Tuesday evening.

DNA expertise in progress

"According to the first elements of the investigation, the body of the infant could have been abandoned in a trash can located in the town of Agde or in one of the surrounding towns" picked up by the agents between 23 and 31 August 2020, a added the prosecutor.

The autopsy carried out on Tuesday in Montpellier showed that the death would date back to a week at most.

DNA tests are underway to try to identify the family of the newborn, according to the prosecutor.
