After teachers on Monday, 12.4 million young people are back on Tuesday.

A very special start to the school year since for all middle and high school students, wearing a mask is mandatory due to the coronavirus epidemic.

For the youngest schoolchildren, parents can accompany them to classes, but under certain conditions.

It's back to school!

After long months without school or almost for a good number of French children, it's time to meet up with friends, discover your teachers and know your schedule.

All 12.4 million French schoolchildren, college and high school students return to school on Tuesday.

Despite the health crisis and the circulation of the coronavirus in France which poses the threat of a tightening of reception rules over the coming weeks, the government hopes that this return will be "as normal as possible".

Europe 1 will follow you live on this particular day.

The main information to remember:

  • More than 12 million students are returning to class today

  • Many health measures are in force in schools, including the wearing of a mask compulsory from middle school

  • "There will be no shortage of teachers in the classes", reassured Jean-Michel Blanquer on Monday

Masks, distancing ...: the health protocol has been relaxed since June

For this new school year, barrier gestures will be more than ever on the agenda.

Physical distancing should be sought as far as possible, but it will not be compulsory.

Teachers will wear a mask, as will students from middle school, including during recess.

With some exceptions, these protections will not be provided: everyone must have their own.

But the establishments will have emergency stocks in case of need.

Parents who want to accompany their children, as is the tradition in kindergarten, will be able to do so under certain conditions.

A school in Hauts-de-Seine, for example, specified that only one of the two parents could enter the school grounds, while being masked.

Covid-19: three questions on the refusal of free masks for students

Several departments, such as Gironde, Pyrénées-Atlantiques or Corse-du-Sud, have just made it compulsory to wear a mask around schools.

In the event of symptoms, tests will be carried out to trace the chain of contamination and take isolation measures, said the minister.

It is also recommended to take your child's temperature before he leaves for school, and to have him stay at home if he has a temperature above 38 °.

"There will be no shortage of teachers in the classes"

“Normally, there will be no shortage of teachers in the classes,” Jean-Michel Blanquer assured Monday, specifying that the few vulnerable people “who cannot be there” would be replaced.

No establishment will be closed on Tuesday because of the Covid-19 epidemic, assured the Minister of National Education.

But this could change in the coming weeks, if the health situation deteriorates, after a joint decision between prefects, rectors and health authorities.

What to eat before going to school?

But the presence of Covid-19 should not obscure good practices!

If they do not eat in the morning, children will therefore run out of fuel and this will directly translate into a drop in attention and intellectual performance around 10-11 a.m.

Take stock of the consequences of confinement

This return to school will also very quickly make it possible to take stock of any delays taken during confinement, and to see whether educational disparities have widened further to be able to remedy them.

In several municipalities, such as Suèvres, in Loir-et-Cher, schoolchildren have returned to school a week earlier than everyone else.

Some of them had not returned there since March.

Emmanuel Macron wishes young people a good start

The head of state, who took off Monday evening for Beirut, will not be able to visit a class this year on the day of the start of the school year as he is used to.

Hence this video recorded in the garden of the Palais and posted on Instagram, a social network very popular with young people.

"It's a bit special back to school, because the virus is still there and you have to protect yourself," he said.

"So I count a lot on you, from tomorrow morning, to apply barrier gestures, wearing a mask and all the rest".
