Used to being a reference destination, Spain is facing a complicated year because of the Covid.

And particularly on the tourism side.

The month of July, which usually sees a large number of holidaymakers land, records a 75% drop in the number of international travelers over one year, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) published on Tuesday.

One of the main consequences of this fall is the decrease, still in July, of 73.4% of reservations in the hotel industry over one year, and of 49.9% in other tourist accommodation, said the INE in recent days. .

A slowed down economy

At the same time, total spending by foreign tourists fell by 79.5%, again over the same period.

As well as the average expenditure per holidaymaker, which fell by 17.8%.

The country's economy is strongly affected by the Covid-19 crisis and the poor form of tourism does not help matters, despite the deconfinement and the reopening of borders on June 21.

The sector indeed represents 12% of the national GDP.

Since deconfinement, the number of Covid-19 cases per day has continued to climb in Spain.

Sanitary measures have been sharply tightened across the country, also with restrictions placed on travelers from foreign countries.
