The traffic office presented the proposal after the politicians asked how they could get fewer people to drive a car in Gothenburg and thus reach the goal in their traffic strategy.

The goal of the strategy is for car traffic to decrease by 25 percent and for public transport and bicycle traffic to double by 2035. But car traffic has been at about the same level all along, while public transport has increased.

The size of the increase is unclear

The goal can be reached, the Traffic Office believes.

But then there is also a need for increased public transport in the city, and more expensive parking spaces.

- It is one of many measures that could be taken to reduce car traffic.

But it is up to the politicians to decide if this is something they want to implement, says Joachim Karlgren, administrator at the traffic office in the city of Gothenburg.

Exactly how large an increase in the congestion tax it would entail will only be decided if politicians adopt the proposal.
