A misleading montage suggests that Joe Biden fell asleep during an interview, which he has never given. - Facebook screenshot

  • Joe Biden, Democratic presidential candidate for November in the United States, did not doze off during an interview.
  • The deceptive edit has gone viral.
  • Biden, former vice president of Barack Obama, is nicknamed "Sleepy Joe" by the Trump camp.

Donald Trump gave him the nickname "Sleepy Joe", "Sleeping Joe". Is this why an Internet user created a montage suggesting, wrongly, that Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate for the US presidential election fell asleep during an interview? The footage has been viewed over a million times on Twitter and also aired on Facebook.

We see a journalist launching a duplex interview with Joe Biden. The latter, who seems sleepy, does not answer, despite the interviewer's injunctions.

FAKE OFF

The video is a montage: Joe Biden never gave this interview. The montage links two sequences which have nothing to do with each other. As for snoring, they have been added.

The footage with the journalist dates from 2011. Leyla Santiago, who at the time worked for the Californian channel KBAK, was interviewing actor Harry Belafonte. Or rather, was trying: when the actor appears on the air, his eyes are closed and he does not respond to the journalist. “Wake up Harry,” Leyla Santiago said to him. After a few seconds, the reporter interrupts the interview as hilarity spreads across the set.

The footage showing Joe Biden comes from a virtual meeting, which took place on April 29. On several occasions during the event which was broadcast live on Facebook, the former vice president of Barack Obama briefly closed his eyes as he listened to Hillary Clinton. From 4 minutes 33 in the video below, he closes his eyelids longer, for about fifteen seconds. Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of the American president, had already used this extract in April to attack the Democrat.

These are the few seconds of the meeting that were extracted to add them to the sequence with Leyla Santiago. The Internet user who created this montage admitted to having "mixed" the two sequences.

After a virtual Democratic convention last week, Joe Biden announced Thursday that he will return to the pitch before the November 3 vote. The Democratic candidate is announced as the favorite in the polls against Donald Trump.
