On Monday morning, the Sundsvall District Court's judgment came in the case of the murder of a man in his 20s in Ånge in December last year.

Four people, three men in the 18-25 age group and one man in the 80s age, were charged in the case. A fifth person suspected of involvement in the murder is still at large but detained in his absence and is still wanted by the police. He is believed to be abroad.

Got nine years in prison

An 18-year-old from Malmö who has been the main suspect in the case is sentenced to nine years in prison for, among other things, murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.

This was also in accordance with Chief Prosecutor Daniel Brodén's request.

- I believe that it is a robbery that has turned into a murder and that the investigation confirms my opinion, said Daniel Brodén during his closing speech in court.

Died of suffocation

The murder victim had been taped tightly around his neck and head and died by suffocation.

Sundsvall District Court considers it beyond any reasonable doubt that the 18-year-old together with "another perpetrator other than those prosecuted in the case so far" deprived of his liberty, robbed and killed the victim.

According to the court, the 18-year-old "was clearly indifferent in relation to the deprivation of liberty of / (the victim) / and his suffocation to death."

Get through the interrogations

The 18-year-old who kept quiet through the police interrogations denied all murder charges during the trial. Has admitted theft of a jacket at the murder victim's home, but no more.

Had he been older, a considerably harsher punishment would probably have been demanded.

Two of the other defendants in the case, both residents of Ånge municipality, are sentenced to prison for participation in the crime. A 20-year-old from western Medelpad is sentenced to two and a half years in prison for robbery, while a 25-year-old from the Stockholm area is sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for, among other things, aiding and abetting aggravated theft and assault in court.

High damages

The elderly man who is said to have given the other suspects help with transport at the time of the crime is sentenced to a suspended sentence and a fine for aiding and abetting aggravated theft.

The 18-year-old convicted of murder is also awarded a substantial sum of damages to the victim's relatives. He must pay a total of SEK 289,347 to the next of kin, and that calculation includes SEK 51,808 for the victim's estate.

Prosecutor comment

- All persons are convicted of involvement in various parts of the course of events. I can state that the district court has followed our line when it comes to the man who is charged and now convicted of murder. The others have been convicted of, among other things, robbery and aiding and abetting aggravated theft. We will now go through the verdict carefully and then decide whether we choose to appeal or not, says chamber prosecutor Christina Edlund Nilsson in a press release.
