• Events: A spectacular fire affects the upper floors of a 21-story skyscraper in Hortaleza

The tenants of the Hortaleza skyscraper that burned last Saturday morning have denounced that the fire alarms did not work because they were disconnected and will demand responsibility for it. They assure that they were canceled by those responsible for the maintenance of the neighborhood community, since the sensors continuously jumped when they detected a minimum heat load.

They add that if the security systems had worked, it could at least have prevented the fire from affecting the floors . "They were disconnected because someone decided they were very annoying," said a neighbor yesterday. "You have to analyze what happened slowly, but it is clear that here someone is responsible for what happened," added this resident.

Likewise, the Scientific Police continues to investigate whether the fire could have started in one of the four attics on the top floor where a barbecue was held early Saturday morning . The flames started on the rooftop and quickly spread across the façade and have completely burned eight homes on the 19th and 20th floors. In addition, another nine apartments have been affected.

Because it is a modern and very well compartmentalized building, the firefighters were able to extinguish the flames even though they started at the top.

A large part of the neighbors have decided to go to other relatives' houses despite the fact that they have electricity and cold water . "We only need hot water, but the smell of smoke is very strong and we are leaving," said another woman yesterday.

Experts from several insurance companies visited several addresses yesterday morning. "At the moment our insurance is going to undertake the cleaning of the smoke inside the house and we will see who pays for the repair of the exterior facade, if the insurance of the neighborhood community, ours or that of the apartment where the barbecue was held", a neighbor from the 18th floor told us.
