Cecilia Malmström (L) with a long career in the EU behind her will be Sweden's candidate for the post of new head of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

This is stated by several sources for SVT News.

The message will be presented tomorrow.

Difficult to assess the chances

According to Christoffer Wendick, EU reporter at SVT, it is currently difficult to assess Malmström's chances as it is all about what the starting field will look like.

Among the candidates are several former ministers.

An interesting competitor, according to Wendick, is Poland's former Prime Minister Marek Belka.

That it was 25 years since a European last held the post of head of the OECD is something that speaks for the European candidates.

- Since the European countries are in the majority in this organization, there are decent chances for any of them if they can only agree, says Christoffer Wendick.

Tax issues are hot

Cecilia Malmström has been the EU Trade Commissioner for five years and knows the issues well.

Not least carbon dioxide tariffs discussed within the EU, on goods produced in countries with less strict environmental legislation, according to Christoffer Wendick.

- Whoever becomes Secretary General of the OECD has to devote a lot of time to tax issues that are very hot.

Especially how new digital companies like Facebook, Google and Apple should be taxed.

"Increasingly interesting"

What significance does the OECD have today?

- It is an international organization that has become increasingly interesting, as other international bodies such as the World Trade Organization, WTO, have fallen behind and lost relevance.

Cecilia Malmström has previously been EU Commissioner, EU Minister and MEP.

Most recently, she made a comeback in domestic politics this spring as the Liberals' member of the new constitutional inquiry.

The current head of the OECD is Mexican economist José Ángel Gurría, who has been in office since 2006. In July, he announced that he would not run for re-election.
