August 31, 2020Amazon gets the green light from the US Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) to license it to operate a fleet of autonomous drones and aims for a delivery time of 30 minutes.

"We will continue to develop and refine our technology to fully integrate delivery drones into airspace and will work closely with the FAA and other regulatory bodies around the world to realize our 30-minute delivery vision," said David. Carbon, vice president of Prime Air, the group's dedicated drone subsidiary based in Seattle.

The company did not disclose a timetable for actual commercial deployment. For now, the license will be used to test customer delivery with its all-electric drones. Amazon began testing in 2013, already with the idea of achieving delivery in one day in 30 minutes. A year ago, he filed a case with the FAA for the right to deliver packages weighing less than 5 pounds (2.3 kg) in sparsely populated areas. Speed and efficiency of delivery are among the key selling points that have contributed to the success of Amazon and its "Prime" subscription plan.
