At Peter Nilsson's organic farm outside Kristianstad, among other things, sugar beets and feed for the 120 milk are grown. There is also a small organic farm dairy where you can buy the farm's own milk and other organic products.

Peter Nilsson himself has not noticed any reduced demand for organic food, except for milk.

- I have noticed that the price of milk has decreased a bit.

According to figures from the Swedish Board of Agriculture, the proportion of organic milk decreased slightly in Skåne in 2019.

More expensive for consumers

Peter Nilsson believes that the price of organic food is a major reason why sales in the retail trade do not increase further. Organic products are more expensive to produce.

- They would like to have organic in the stores, but there will never be a big seller because it costs too much.

He also believes that the discussion about Swedish, sustainable and climate-smart affects demand.

- All are customers are not so familiar. Some believe that everything Swedish is organic, says Peter Nilsson.

Gives smaller harvests

The relatively smaller outcome of crops from an organic farm compared to a conventional farm, he believes is one of the reasons why organic is not always equated with sustainable.

- If you get two tonnes of organic cucumber per hectare, and you have a conventional cultivation that gives 80 tonnes per hectare, then it is clear that you can see it that way.

- It is also easier to fail with organic farming, which increases the load. At the same time, we have not put chemicals or fertilizers there.

He himself sees great potential in new technology and new crops.

- There is a lot we can do to make ecology more sustainable and climate-smart.
