Ecuadorean researchers at the Institute of Microbiology at the University of Quito said yesterday that a man who beat "Covid-19" had contracted the disease again.

The institute wrote on its Twitter page: “The Institute of Microbiology at the University of Quito recorded the first confirmed case of re-infection of the emerging corona virus that causes (Covid-19) disease in a patient from Ecuador.”

The institute added that "the genes of the virus found in the Ecuadorian patient were sequenced in May and again in August, which indicates that they are two different strains."

The first infection of the Ecuadorian patient in May was mild, and he showed moderate symptoms in August. Between the two infections, he took a test for Corona virus in July, and the result was negative.

The researchers in Ecuador also found that the patient's second infection saw an increase in immune antibodies against the virus in his body, which means that he already had antibodies. Researchers in Hong Kong, Belgium and the Netherlands had previously reported documented cases of re-infection with the Coronavirus. And American scientists finally demonstrated a renewed infection with the Coronavirus in a patient who had already recovered some time ago.

The World Health Organization stated that more than six months after the emergence of the new Corona virus, there is still much unknown about the possibility of renewed infection. The few reports of such cases so far have raised many questions. The researchers assume, after laboratory studies, that overcoming the Coronavirus infection can provide at least a temporary protection for the patient against re-infection.
