The Popular Party categorically rejects the "war between languages" postulated by the San Sebastián City Council in the future Basque Plan and is already working on the preparation of political and social initiatives to minimize its effects.

The municipal spokesman of the PP in the Gipuzkoan capital, Borja Corominas , warned this Thursday, in addition, that the intention of the Consistory to impose the Basque language as a mandatory work language among municipal officials violates the rights of any Spanish citizen to be a municipal official.

The San Sebastian City Council regrets in its roadmap for the promotion of Basque that the use of Spanish has increased in recent years.

The PP will raise its voice within the San Sebastián City Council to prevent the new plan to boost Basque from becoming a "language war" by linking its development with the reduction of the use of Spanish in the municipality.

Town Hall's "wrong approach"

"We are already working to redirect a wrong approach that is very far from the image of San Sebastián as a city open to the world and proud of its traditions," stressed the PP spokesman at the San Sebastián City Council.

Corominas flatly refuses to interpret the imposition of its use on all public employees as a strategy to support Basque when, as stated in the plan itself, 60,358 residents of San Sebastián speak Spanish and the 81,247 Basque speakers are also capable of using both languages interchangeably.

The Basque plan sponsored by PNV and the Socialist Party of the Basque Country in San Sebastián considers a problem that from 2011 to 2016 will increase the percentage of people who speak Spanish and decrease the number of "co-speakers", where it places 19% of Donostiarras.

"Political sectarianism"

"Languages unite us and whoever tries to use a language is only moved by a political sectarianism that we do not share and that with our representation in the San Sebastián City Council we will try to counteract", the popular spokesman who replaced Borja Sémper promised when last 14 January he left politics.

Also the president of the PP of Guipúzcoa, José Luis Arrué , denounced this Thursday the "politicization" of the Basque language promoted by the PNV with the approval of the Socialist Party of Euskadi in San Sebastián.

The San Sebastian City Council will present on September 15 the measures that it intends to apply in the next four years, including a commitment to the Basque language of the «linguistic landscape» that translates into the gradual abolition of commercial signs in Spanish.

In addition, extracurricular activities in Basque will be increased after verifying that young people educated in this language from Infants choose to learn Spanish in Baccalaureate and Vocational Training.
