  • Coronavirus: No test, no nurses, no ratios: the missing measures for a safe school year
  • The measures: Mask from six years of age, hand washing and temperature control

The worsening of the epidemiological situation on the coronavirus in recent weeks and the delay of the Government and the autonomies in taking new health safety measures in the classrooms have forced several regions to change their plans and delay or stagger the return to the school just a week before the start of the school year.

Many centers have not arrived in time to organize an atypical return which, according to the agreement reached this Thursday between the counselors and the ministers of Education, Isabel Celaá, and Health, Salvador Illa, implies establishing rotating shifts from 3rd year of ESO ( 14 years) so that half of the students go to school and the other half study from home.

The new measures force the autonomies to change the protocols they approved during the summer. The problem is that the injection of 2,000 million euros from the Government has not yet arrived and the planning is being done blindly. The centers do not yet know how many additional teachers they will have and that makes their calculations difficult when trying to form smaller groups.

The delay causes headaches for parents, who do not know who to leave their children with during those days of September, once the idea of turning to grandparents has been discarded. The autonomies have asked the Government for more measures to improve work and family conciliation and a paid leave to families affected by Covid-19.

Precisely, this Friday, the vice president of the Catalan Generalitat, Pere Aragonès , urged the Government to specify this aid. "What we ask is that they exercise their powers and, if they are not capable of exercising them, if they are not strong enough, that they transfer them to the Government," he warned.

These are the changes to the school calendar:

Asturias

The course is delayed 12 days in Infant and Primary - it was going to begin on September 10 and now it will do so on September 22 - and 15 days in ESO and Baccalaureate - the opening was set for the 14th and is delayed until the 28th and 29th. In FP, it is postponed 12 days: it will start on the 30th instead of the 18th.

The counselor Carmen Suárez explained that the measure responds to the objective of starting with guarantees and the intention of waiting to see how the pandemic evolves in the first 15 days of September, when it is expected that the contagion data for the end of the summer will already be known.

The return has also been delayed because PCR tests will be carried out on all teachers. The school calendar will be maintained, yes, in 175 days and the lost will be recovered by putting more school days throughout the next month of June.

Valencian Community

It will allow centers that require it to adopt a progressive return. The return will take place between September 7 and 11, as decided by the directors. The counselor Vicent Marzà said this Friday that "it is a measure that allows both students and families to teach about the dynamics of protection and hygiene in educational centers."

Basque Country

The Basque Country announced this Friday that it will stagger back to classrooms to make a progressive return, first with the incorporation of Kindergarten, Primary and 1st and 2nd ESO students (on September 7) and then with 3rd and 4th grade students of ESO and Baccalaureate (the 15th). Initially, a "generalized" start was contemplated from the 7th, but for the elderly the return to the classroom has been delayed eight days given the evolution of the pandemic.

Madrid's community

Madrid, which criticizes the government's delay in taking measures, also announced this week a delay in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades of Primary (they will begin on September 17, instead of 8) and in 1st and 2nd of ESO (they go from 9 to 18).

Canary Islands

Canarias was the first to realize, already in July, that they were not going to arrive on time, and moved the start of the course from 9 to 15 September.

Galicia

It will keep the scheduled schedule, but the CIG, CCOO, STEG and CSIF unions have called for two days of strike against the measures adopted by the Xunta.
