In the world of music, clashes often arise over who has the greatest number of fans, the number of sales or internal reasons for the record label. But this time labor competitiveness had nothing to do with it.

At first it may seem that Bertín Osborne (65) and Joan Manuel Serrat (76) only have the same profession in common. Perhaps the only similarity that can be seen is that both, so different from each other, have sung to the Mediterranean. The Catalan author in his famous song from 1971, turned into a generational hymn; and the Madrid-born interpreter some years later, when he made his musical debut in the early 80s, and captivated crowds of women singing his Mediterranean Love.

In short, two different styles, a simple and committed composer facing a melodic singer who made his way through romantic ballads. But there is something else that unites them and they will never forget: a fierce fight with punches included.

In 1973 Bertín Osborne was only 18 years old and still not professionally dedicated to the world of song, although he had already participated in a festival held in El Escorial (Madrid). Those were the times when, despite being the son of the Count of Donadío de Casasola, he set out to make a living working as a salesman in a real estate agency where there were no arranged appointments, which forced him to show his self-confidence knocking door to door. The artist has recognized that during his youth, partying occupied a good part of his free time, coming to define himself as a public danger. It is around this time that the following story took place.

NIGHT OUT

After having gone out to dinner, Bertín went like so many times to what was the nerve center of his nocturnal escapades, the Madrid nightclub Gitanillos . He was accompanied by his friend Koke Calleja, an adventure buddy at the time, who years later would become Pitita Ridruejo's son-in-law. As expected, in the case of Bertín, the female company was not lacking either . Both spent the evening with Ana, with whom Osborne had a flirtation, and another young woman who held the title of Miss Texas. Both couples were sitting in a corner of the room, immersed in their conversation and absent from what was happening around them.

Bertín's flirt got ready to go to the bathroom, and on the way there she suddenly ran into Joan Manuel Serrat, who politely invited her to sit down with him and his group of friends for a drink. The Catalan singer-songwriter, who had had his first child four years ago, as a result of his relationship with the model Mercedes Domènech, was already by then a recognized and admired figure in the world of music. Perhaps that explains the fact that Ana, nervous, returned to the discreet table at which she was hardly speaking.

Due to the silence of the young woman, Bertín, surprised, asked her what was wrong. The girl did not dare to tell him, until after a while she explained that those at the next table had tried to flirt with her . As soon as he heard what happened, Koke, Bertín's friend, exploded the glass of whiskey he was drinking in his hand. He jumped up and went straight to the place where those who already considered his adversaries were.

As Bertín himself would clarify at the end of the 80s, recalling such an episode of youthful momentum, before his friend threw himself into the brawl, he yelled at him to leave him first, since the girl was with him and therefore he had the right to take the first blow. Apparently the fight was monumental, to the point that Bertín's friend broke his fist when, in one of the blows, he mistakenly hit the wall, having to be plastered.

The singer took revenge directly against Serrat, who managed to curl up on the couch so that he could avoid bigger blows. As Osborne himself confessed: "I don't know if I hurt him or not, but the truth is that I gave him a series of punches that should not have been very pleasant . " Luckily reason prevailed and the people around them rushed to separate them, just at the moment when Joan Manuel was holding on to the neck.

Over the years, when Bertín was already dedicated to the song, he met Serrat. After greeting him and checking that he couldn't find who he was, he reminded him of that first meeting, by way of apology. The interpreter of Penelope, answered: "There it goes! You were the animal that!", While everything was between laughter . When Bertín was asked in the beginning who he considered to be the most important Spanish singer of the moment, he did not hesitate to answer that the best was Serrat, and took the opportunity to emphasize that he did not like any of Julio Iglesias' songs, of which he did not even He had no record, although he recognized his worth and talent.

That confrontation, of which the Madrid artist claims to be sorry, was left as something anecdotal. Coincidences of life, Bertín presented a program entitled Those crazy little ones , so all that remains is for Joan Manuel Serrat to finally decide to go to My house is yours , after having previously rejected the invitation.
