"The situation in the field of health care in Syria was discussed, including in the context of the new coronavirus pandemic," the statement said.

The parties paid special attention to efforts to rebuild medical institutions affected by the Syrian crisis, to ensure the population's access to quality health services and the supply of medicines.

Vershinin reaffirmed Russian support for the efforts of WHO in Syria, readiness for active cooperation, the Foreign Ministry added.

As noted in the department, at present in Syria, with Russian financial support, a number of projects of UN organizations, including WHO, are being implemented, aimed at helping to restore the health system, with special attention to ensuring maternal and child health.

Earlier, UN experts called for the lifting or weakening of sanctions against developing countries, as restrictive measures deprive citizens of access to basic necessities.

Among the countries most affected by the sanctions, experts included Syria and Venezuela. 

As noted by experts, it is necessary to urgently lift, suspend or minimize the sanctions, so that "medicines, medical equipment, food and fuel can be delivered."
