French ministers follow one another in Iraq. The objective is none other than to show France's support for the new Iraqi government. It is in particular need, when it is in the grip of a political, economic and health crisis. On Wednesday evening, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, therefore arrived in Baghdad some time after the visit of Jean-Yves Le Drian.

Resumption of the themes of Le Drian

According to her cabinet, Florence Parly is due to meet this Thursday with the commander of the forces of the international anti-jihadist coalition, President Barham Saleh and Prime Minister Moustafa al-Kazimi, in office since May. She will then have lunch with her Iraqi counterpart, Jumaa Enad Al-Joubouri. During these discussions, the minister planned to resume the major themes addressed six weeks earlier by the head of French diplomacy: the fight against the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) and respect for the sovereignty of Iraq, where Iranians and Americans flex their muscles.

Florence Parly should also discuss with her interlocutors the "Turkish interference" on Iraqi territory, in particular the air strikes against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK, Kurdish opposition in Turkey) in Iraqi Kurdistan. "We have gone to a level of distortion of Iraqi sovereignty which is worrying", it was stressed on Wednesday at the Ministry of the Armed Forces, reiterating "France's full support for Iraqi sovereignty, within the framework of a complicated regional balancing act ".

Continue the fight against Daesh

When it comes to the fight against terrorism, Paris regularly alerts the international community to the need not to let our guard down in the face of ISIS, while the American-Iranian tensions at the start of the year and the global health crisis have placed the subject in second place. plan. "We detect elements of reorganization of Daesh in the underground which was not unforeseen, but which is a real challenge for Iraq", underlines the ministry.

The dissensions within the coalition, of which France is a member, continue to grow. The Europeans in particular accuse Washington of endangering the presence of foreign anti-IS troops by unilaterally carrying out raids against Shiite factions favorable to Iran.
