Three weeks ago, SVT Nyheter Väst presented statistics on how the spread of infection has increased in recent weeks. The differences between the municipalities were large. The updated statistics also now look at the increase in the number of cases per 10,000 inhabitants, but this time between the end of week 29 (19 July) and the end of week 34 (23 August).

Tourist municipality with many cases

The largest increase has taken place in Sotenäs municipality, followed by Dals-Ed. Both are relatively small municipalities, where Sotenäs has a total of 51 new confirmed cases during the period, and Dals-Ed 28. Since then, the spread of infection is a little more even. 20 of the region's municipalities have an increase between 10 and 20 confirmed cases per 10,000 inhabitants, 19 municipalities have fewer than 10 new cases per 10,000 inhabitants.

Erika Hassellöv is human resources manager at Sotenäs municipality and chairman of the municipality's pandemic group.

The increased number of cases seen in recent weeks does not change Sotenäs' work against the corona pandemic.

- We continue just as usual. We have recommendations to follow from infection control doctors and the Public Health Agency and we do, says Erika Hassellöv, chairman of the pandemic group in the municipality.

"Can turn around quickly"

Last week, 396 new infections were found in the entire region, which is a decrease of a couple of hundred cases compared to the previous weeks. The number of infections decreases in all age groups, but it is still young adults between 20 and 39 years who are the age group where most new cases are found. Infection control Västra Götaland thinks that the development that is now visible is good.

- It is clear that many do everything they can to follow the advice and recommendations that exist, otherwise we would have had significantly more cases. Then you should be aware that it can turn around quickly again. But I am cautiously optimistic, says Thomas Wahlberg, infection control doctor.

Concerns that the number of cases may increase rapidly again are partly linked to the fact that many are back at work after the holidays, and also to more people traveling to Europe, where the number of cases is increasing again.

- Now it is important to make everyone understand that it can turn upwards again. The infection is still present in society and we must be very careful not to let go. If you have signs of symptoms, you should definitely go and get tested, says Thomas Wahlberg.
