In view of the massacre perpetrated, the verdict is not surprising. The Christchurch mosque killer was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday without the possibility of release. White supremacist Brenton Tarrant was convicted of 51 murders of Muslim worshipers in the 2019 massacre.

Alone in his defense

The verdict is exemplary. He is indeed the first person to be sentenced in New Zealand to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The culprit had not even tried to do everything to limit his sentence. Brenton Tarrant had chosen to defend himself, challenging his lawyers last month. He had also decided not to speak out during his trial.

The Australian killer, who pleaded guilty in March, said he wanted to sow fear among the Muslim population, described as "invaders". Faced with the survivors overwhelmed by grief and anger who testified during these four days of hearings, the 29-year-old Australian remained unmoved.
