"Earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.1 were registered on Friday at 1:14 (17:14 Moscow time on Thursday) near the southern Kuriles," said Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station.

She said that "the epicenter of the tremors was located at a point with coordinates 44.3 degrees north latitude and 148.4 east longitude - 59 km southeast of Iturup Island, the focus was located at a depth of 50 km."

Earlier it was reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 occurred in Avacha Bay off the southeastern coast of Kamchatka.
