• USA: Two killed in the Wisconsin riots due to police violence against Jacob Blake
  • Tension. Third night of protests in Wisconsin for police shooting a black man in the back

The war against racism and police brutality in the United States has a new epicenter. For the third night in a row, Kenosha, Wisconsin, a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan north of Chicago, was the scene of violent protests that left two dead and one seriously injured, according to police. The outrage was sparked by another incident that has traveled around the world after a police officer, accompanied by other armed officers, fired several shots in the back at an African American, Jacob Blake, in front of his young children.

The fact that Blake miraculously survived seven shots on Sunday hasn't lessened the tension. He is stable but serious, paralyzed from the waist down. Protesters staged scenes in Kenosha reminiscent of those in other cities in the US three months ago after George Floyd's death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. Since Sunday, the looting of shops, the burning of numerous buildings and the clashes both with the police and with members of the National Guard displaced to the area, about a hundred agents, have not stopped. President Donald Trump , for his part, has already announced the dispatch of more troops.

The challenge to the imposed curfew was massive. The protests took place in front of the scene and in the city center, next to the local courts that the security forces protected with metal fences located around the perimeter. The throwing of bottles and stones was constant for hours , an attack to which the agents responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

The police eventually broke up the demonstration but a small group gathered next to a gas station a few blocks away. There they got into a confrontation with several armed men willing to protect their property. The shots that killed two people occurred after midnight, without the identity of the deceased being released. It is known that a teenager has been charged with one of the deaths.

Sheriff David Beth took advantage of the incident to defend his department and use it as a model of why citizens should not be armed, as he has been suggested in recent cases of police brutality. "I've had people come to me and say, 'Why don't you employ citizens?'" She told The New York Times. "This is why citizens are not armed to protect Kenosha . "

Like the scene of Floyd's death on May 25, the brutal assault on Blake, 29, was recorded on a phone camera. In the first released images, the African American is seen walking towards his car, chased by agents pointing a gun at him. Blake ignores them and when he is about to get into his car, one of the policemen, whose name has not been released, fires seven bullets at him unceremoniously. Soon after, the African American was taken to a hospital.

The medical part, at the moment, is not very encouraging. "He is fighting for his life and it will take a miracle for him to walk again , " said Ben Crump, the family's attorney. His father, Jacob Blake Sr., confirmed that he suffers from paralysis and that he will have to undergo further interventions after the one initially practiced after his admission. They do not know if it is a permanent injury or if he will be able to walk again. "A bullet went through part or all of his spinal cord, at least one bullet. He has holes in his stomach. They had to remove almost all of his colon and small intestine," explained Patrick Salvi, another attorney representing the Blakes.

"It was a senseless assassination attempt ," the victim's father told the media. "They shot my son seven times, as if his life didn't matter." They ask that justice be done and that the name of the officer who attacked his son be known, an investigation in the hands of the Wisconsin authorities. For the moment, the policeman has been temporarily suspended.

Julia Jackson , Blake's mother, also spoke to reporters Tuesday calling for an end to the violence on her son's behalf. "I've been able to see a lot of damage done," he said. "That does not reflect my family or my son." She also shared Blake's first words from the hospital. "I don't want to be a burden to anyone. I want my babies. Call my boss," he said by way of apology for what happened. "Thank goodness he's alive," said his uncle, Justin Blake. "We are just praying that he can have a great recovery and that he has a good quality of life so that his father, my brother, can enjoy him."

Her sister, Zietha Blake , also mediated the matter. She explained to an army of the media what kind of person she is. "A father, son, uncle and brother who focuses on the people she loves. But first and foremost she is a human being. Her life matters." He is also the grandson of the Rev. Jacob Blake Sr., an activist with multiple causes behind him who marched for the assassination of Martin Luther King in Memphis in 1968. Blake grew up outside of Chicago and had moved to Kenosha for work.

Blake tried to mediate an argument between two women in what appears to have been a domestic incident, according to one of the family's lawyers. The crudest part was the fact that Blake's three sons, ages 3, 5 and 8, watched their father get shot . All three were in the car when it happened.
