The US Embassy in Moscow on Tuesday called on the Russian authorities to conduct an "immediate investigation" into the alleged poisoning of the main Kremlin opponent, Alexeï Navalny, hospitalized in Germany in a coma after being transferred from Russia.

The poisoning thesis put forward by German doctors "necessitates an immediate, complete and transparent investigation by the Russian authorities", declared the American ambassador to Moscow, John Sullivan, quoted on Twitter by his spokesperson Rebecca Ross.

"Deeply concerned" by Navalny's state of health

John Sullivan also called for "to hold responsible the parties which are at the origin of this act", according to the same source.

Visiting Moscow on Tuesday, the number two in American diplomacy, Stephen Biegun, also said he was "deeply concerned" by the state of health of Alexei. Navalny and by “the impact on Russian civil society” of his alleged poisoning.

He stressed "the importance of transparency and freedom of expression in any democratic society," said Ross.

The conclusions of German doctors deemed hasty by the Kremlin

The Kremlin ruled on Tuesday hasty the conclusions of German doctors who estimated that Alexeï Navalny had been poisoned, ensuring that it was "one track among others".

The opponent remains immersed in an artificial coma, in serious condition even if his life is not in danger. After becoming unwell on a plane, he was first hospitalized in Siberia before being transferred to the Charité hospital in Berlin.
