In Hong Kong "it is essential to preserve the high degree of autonomy and freedom. We will follow the implications of the new law on national security very carefully". Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said at a press conference at Villa Madama with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. "I reiterated that with the European partners we believe that Hong Kong's stability and prosperity, based on the principle of one country two systems, are essential", added Di Maio.

"China is undoubtedly one of our main partners and it cannot be forgotten that it is now an unavoidable player to face any international scenario" added Di Maio. There is a "confrontation based on frankness" with China and "our international position is very clear to everyone, starting with our membership in NATO, which is stronger than ever" he said, "this allows us to have a healthy and loyal relationship with China ".

Di Maio therefore announced two agreements. "We have signed two agreements: one for gas with Snam and one for the export of Made in Italy agri-food products. To this must be added some important partnerships in the energy and transport sectors".

Wang: Hong Kong law guarantees independence
"This is my first visit to Europe after the global outbreak of the pandemic, and it is in Italy: this demonstrates the importance of our relations with Italy and with the EU" he Wang said at the press conference. "We discussed Hong Kong with Minister Di Maio in respect of a spirit of non-interference. I told him that the reason for the security law is to fill the gaps that existed for many years and to fight the violent acts that take place everywhere in the island. We made the law to guarantee the rights of all and autonomy. We made the law because it is our fundamental right to safeguard the freedom and safety of the inhabitants ".
