At least 12 people have died in the Dominican Republic and Haiti after tropical storm Laura caused major flooding. In addition, over one million people were left without electricity and several houses were completely destroyed.

Double storms against the USA

Meanwhile, tropical storm Marco is sweeping across the Gulf of Mexico straight to the south coast of the United States, and is expected to sweep across the state of Louisiana on Monday.

Storm Laura is also on its way to the United States, and is also expected to shift in strength to a hurricane.

- Even if Marco does not become a hurricane, it will cause sea levels to rise, which means that Laura's tidal wave can worsen, reach further and do greater damage, says SVT's meteorologist Pererik Åberg.

Issued emergency mode

President Donald Trump has issued a state of emergency and called for the evacuation of residents in the Lafourche area, near New Orleans, Louisiana.
