There has been a lot of unrest in Belarus, and not least in Minsk, since the election. Thousands of protesters and critics of the regime have been arrested, and many testify to brutality and violence.

Alexei Kurachev was arrested on August 12, and received kicks to the head and batons all over his body.

The injuries became very serious, and Alexei received intensive care for three days. But now he is on the road to recovery and has been allowed to come home to his girlfriend Maria Strotseva.

She talks about the anxiety when Alexey suddenly could not be reached. She tried to call and call but the call was just pushed away by the police.

- We knew nothing. We did not know if we would ever see him again, she tells SVT.

The election result, in which President Alexander Lukashenko received about 80 percent of the vote, has been questioned by a number of countries, including Sweden.

At the end of last week, Lukashenko himself graduated 250 police officers for "impeccable service" - something that upset many of the protesters, who talk about violence from the police force. On Sunday, President Alexander Lukashenko called on the military to be "fully operational."

Interior Minister Yuriy Karaev has previously partially apologized for the violence during the protests.

- I take responsibility and apologize to those who were accidentally injured, he says.
