During the first seven months of 2020, traffic mortality was much lower than usual throughout the country. A total of 114 people died between January and July, of which four of the deaths were in Sörmland.

During the same period last year, eight people died in traffic in the county.

- We know that the number of vehicles driving on the roads has decreased during the corona pandemic, but it is too early to say whether this is the only thing that has led to the decrease. We usually do an analysis in February or March the following year where we collect data from various sources such as autopsies to ensure what it was due to. Only then can we analyze the figures, says Khabat Amin, statistician at the Swedish Transport Agency.

Get injured in traffic

The number of seriously injured in traffic has also been record low in Sörmland. So far, nine people have been seriously injured in traffic. This is a decrease of 73 percent compared with the same period last year when 33 people were seriously injured in Sörmlandstrafiken.

The number of people with minor injuries so far this year is 279, which is a large decrease compared to the same period last year when 324 people were slightly injured in traffic in Sörmland.

On the right path towards the zero vision

The Swedish Transport Agency hopes that the low death rates will continue for the rest of the year.

- We believe that we will achieve the zero vision's intermediate goal for 2020 if it continues like this. The goal this year is a maximum of 220 dead people, says Khabat Amin.

Last year, 221 people died in traffic in Sweden.
