  • Harassment.Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero cancel their vacations in Asturias due to "harassment" and calls to escraches

They detect that the tension is growing. And they fear that serious violence may occur. For this reason, specialists in the protection of personalities of the Ministry of the Interior are reviewing the security of some prominent politicians.

They have detected how harassment is increasingly belligerent on social networks. But also, in the streets themselves. And there are two sources that deeply concern these security analysts: Podemos and Vox.

The acts of protest at the home of Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero have been going on for weeks and have become a headache for the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska. In the house, up to fifty anti-riot agents from the Civil Guard were brought together to control concentrations that barely reached one hundred attendees.

The episodes in which the Iglesias-Montero family has been singled out have continued during their vacations. These analysts have not detected, however, serious risk situations. In fact, they have not considered the graffiti that appeared on an Asturian highway near where the vice president and the minister with her family were to stay.

In this case, therefore, experts consider the situation to be "highly controllable" from a police point of view. However, security when they leave their normal surroundings has been reinforced. Above all, with counter-surveillance throughout the itinerary. The primary safety circle on both is maintained.

It is more worrying that particular data and addresses appear on social networks where prominent politicians from both the Government and the opposition parties can be located, including several ministers, who subsequently give rise to concentrations.

These specialists also find it very relevant -more, even- the acts of harassment that are taking place against more prominent figures of Vox. Direct death threats appear, mainly against its leader, Santiago Abascal, but also against other leaders such as Macarena Olona and Iván Espinosa de los Monteros . Many of them do not have any protection from the State and experts fear that some "delicate situation" may arise.

For this reason, Interior analysts defend the need, at least in the most cutting-edge cases, to launch some counter-surveillance deployment. They insist that many threats are death threats. They recall the harassment that has occurred against leaders of this formation during the electoral campaign in the Basque Country and they fear that it will be repeated on the imminent campaign (pending Quim Torra setting the date) for the Catalan elections.

These analysts also understand that the autumn - which they foresee to be hot from the social point of view - will not precisely help cool these situations, but rather the opposite.

As for the members of the Government who have been publicly singled out for important controversies, several of them have seen their security reinforced, especially the static in the areas where they reside. One of those affected by this reinforcement is the head of Development, José Luis Ábalos , also indicated on social networks.

The tension also affects the security deployment of the Prime Minister. During Pedro Sánchez's vacation period, more than fifty state security agents are participating in shielding his security and that of his family. The usual belt with which the President of the Government travels, made up of around thirty agents of the National Police , is increased during their trips by a large number of members of the Civil Guard who are in charge of monitoring the physical environment and the displacements of the president and his family.

A hot autumn

The moments of tension around various political leaders are not considered in the Ministry of the Interior something specific, but a circumstance that will not disappear in the short term. The dire economic situation and the second wave of coronavirus anticipate an autumn of great social conflict for security experts. In this context, protests of all kinds are expected and violent acts are not ruled out. It already happened during the previous crisis, when the leaders of the PP were subjected to enormous harassment and in some cases there were attacks. In this sense, the security of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will be reinforced above all, since there are signs of imminent protests against him.
