US President Donald Trump announced that the US Food and Drug Administration authorized - in emergency situations - the use of recovered plasma to treat Corona virus patients, at a press conference.

00:36 Trump announcement

Trump announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized in emergency cases the use of recovered plasma to treat Corona virus patients.

Trump added, "We are working to remove everything that may delay finding a vaccine for Corona virus."

Plasma is the liquid component of blood that is extracted from patients who have recovered from an infection, such as a coronavirus infection. When a person overcomes a disease, they produce enough antibodies to save another person's life. The basic idea is that these antibodies "can provide temporary assistance by intervening to fight off the virus, until that person develops an immune response."

00:35 American Food and Drug Administration announcement

The US Food and Drug Administration said it had authorized the use of blood plasma from patients who had recovered from Covid-19 to treat those who still had the disease, according to Reuters.

The Food and Drug Administration said that early indications indicate that blood plasma from recovered patients can reduce the risk of death and improve health, if patients receive it in the first 3 days of their admission to hospital.

She added that she decided the safety of this method of treatment after analyzing the data of 20 thousand patients they had received, and that 70,000 had been treated so far using blood plasma of those recovering from the disease.

And the administration indicated that the patients who showed the most benefit in this method of treatment, were less than 80 years old and were not on ventilators.

The director of the administration confirmed that Trump did not speak with him or his administration, and that he had no role in making the decision to announce the matter.

According to Reuters, this announcement came a day after Trump blamed the administration for blocking permission to use vaccines and drugs for Corona, for what he described as political reasons.

The announcement also comes before the Republican Party convention, in which Trump will formally run for the next presidential election to compete for a new 4-year term.
