• Bad weather, storm in Veneto

23 August 2020 Veneto was hit by a violent storm that hit the provinces of Verona, Vicenza and Padua in particular. At 7 pm today, over 120 requests for intervention were received by the operating rooms of the Veneto fire brigade due to the severe bad weather that has been affecting the region since late afternoon.

The province of Verona is the most affected area due to the fall of trees and flooding, so much so that teams from the mobile columns of the Venice and Rovigo commands were also sent to support the Scaligeri firefighters. The wave of bad weather has affected various areas of the city of Verona, from the historic center to the residential district of Borgo Trento up to Veronetta, a district which has been repeatedly hit by storms even in recent weeks. In addition to the capital, the municipalities of San Pietro in Cariano, Castelnuovo del Garda, Lazise, ​​Pescantina, Bussolengo, Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella are affected with damage to be assessed for the production of wine.

In the province of Vicenza numerous interventions by the fire brigade due to the strong wind and rain due to the fall of branches, trees and flooding. In addition to the Berica city, the municipalities of Thiene, Pojana Maggiore, Torri di Quartesolo, Orgiano, Thiene, Costabissara, Zanè, Altavilla, Piovene Rocchette and Costabissara are also involved. 

In the province of Padua, the fire brigade reported damage from very strong wind and rain in Pernumia, Villafranca Padovana, San Pietro in Gu, Carmignano del Brenta, Fontaniva, Monselice, San Giorgio delle Pertiche, Limena, Gazzo, Saletto Euganeo.

The storm has entered in full counterexodus. Many Venetians had to face the return home under a strong hailstorm with grains as large as walnuts and very large rainfall. In Verona some streets were covered with a white mantle and flooded, while in others the water exceeded even one and a half meters. The traffic police have announced that 500 trees have been cut down: "no one was injured, we can speak of a miracle". Gusts of wind, uprooted trees even in the province of Vicenza, where bad weather has not spared the vineyards of Valpolicella now on the eve of the harvest. 

In Cortina d'Ampezzo, in the province of Belluno, the state road 51 "di Alemagna" is temporarily closed in both directions due to a mudslide and debris. Interventions are underway to restore the alternating one-way traffic.

State of emergency
The President of Veneto Luca Zaia is about to sign the declaration of the state of crisis for the Municipality of Verona and other municipalities in the Veronese area. The situation is evolving and constantly monitored by the regional Civil Protection. It is not excluded that in the next few hours, once the damage caused by the wave of bad weather has been ascertained, the decree on the state of crisis may also be extended by other municipalities in the Veneto region.
